Erie Science Consortium
Seeks Public Support for Buoy System
HARRISBURG, Pa. (March 20) – The Erie-based Regional Science Consortium is seeking public support of a grant application it submitted to the Boat U.S. Foundation to help educate the public about a new buoy system which will be placed in the Pennsylvania waters of Lake Erie in May.
The Weather, Water, and Wave Buoy System will be deployed this May and will provide real-time data – every 20 minutes – on lake condition which everyone can access. It will be placed a few miles off the point of Presque Isle and will provide valuable information to local boaters and the many tourists who visit the area. The nearest buoys are in Dunkirk, N.Y., and Conneaut, OH.
The consortium’s grant has advanced to a public voting round. Individuals can cast one vote per day for their top project. The projects with the most votes will receive funding. Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. on March 28.

The grant application states: “This new Buoy System will measure 17 different parameters, including air and water temperature, wind, rain, and wave height, direction and period. Through a variety of communication means for boaters (of all ages), this project will educate boaters on how to access the Buoy System data website prior to launching their boat or traveling to the boat launch. Communications include: signs with Smartphone QR codes and web address installed at 30 boat launches and marinas; Window clings, Watch Cards, and Fact Sheets for distribution/display at marinas, bait shops, and lecture events; development of a Text Alert system that will send text messages when weather, water, or wave conditions change; and a video camera attachment on the buoy system providing 30 second clips of Lake conditions (updated hourly). We will provide lectures to yacht clubs, sail groups, boater organizations, and sportsman’s clubs to educate boaters on the buoy system and how to access the information.”
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is a member of the consortium, a collaborative, non-profit organization that focuses on and coordinates educational and research projects for Lake Erie and the upper Ohio River Basin. The consortium is based at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center at Presque Isle.
