Weekend Monongahela River Report

Launched the boat in South Side (Birmingham Bridge) Sunday morning around 10am with my Dad. This was the first time I have used the South Side location boat ramp. Launching was no issue since it was still early but coming back in the afternoon was a challenge.  That launch gets used heavily since its the closest one to the point. There was a Pirate game Sunday afternoon so most of the traffic was heading that way.

We ran up the Allegheny to Red Fins to fuel up and put another $80 worth of fuel into the boat.  I ran up river to fish where Pine Creek comes into the Allegheny. I caught one smallie for the post part fishing was slow on the Allegheny. I felt worked up and wanted to explore around. The whole excitement of exploring new waters was a really cool feeling. There was so many places I wanted to try. I’ve that fishing the MON up around the Sand Castle area can be pretty well. We pulled the lines and headed back down river tot he point which boat traffic was picking up (11:30am). The BUCCO game boats were starting to set in so we cruised around the point which was pretty cool.

We sped up the Mon to around the Highland Park / SandCastle area. I found some nice rocky structure which we found fish right away. I caught a Sheephead and Rick caught a Cat Fish in our first drift. The boat traffic started to pick up as the afternoon went on which made things difficult to navigate on the boat. They took the boat docks out at Sand Castle Water park but boat still park right in front of the park to party. Some bigger luxury boats came bye producing some big wakes. We took one big wave on the bow that made me pucker up but the boat did really well.

It was a great day to be on the water that produced really good fishing on the Mon. The trip was a success.

Coming back to the South Side ramp was a headache with all the boat traffic. I need to find a better ramp to launch at that does not have so much traffic with recreation boating. IM still getting comfortable driving the boat up on the trailer.
