Connoquenessing Creek Fishing Report 7/16/2012

Rain the forecast

Watched the weather reports all week and Sunday was looking like it might be a good chance I could fish, I was correct! Most of the week the reports called for rain all weekend but Sunday was calling for a “chance of rain” which ended up being the case.  Humidity and lingering storm clouds in the area but no rain….

This spring and summer has been a dry ball of wax. Fishing has been tough for many anglers in the Pittsburgh area and IM one of them. Headed north on 79 about noon to fish connoquenessing creek off of Zelienople exit. Found a place to park and headed down stream to find some holes. I never fished this area but I hoped to find some nice smallmouth fishing grounds. I covered alot of ground but only to see many of minnows and little of bass. The stream was nothing short of beautiful which would be ideal for smallmouth fishing but the smallmouth just don’t exist.  Any good wadding fishermen can tell you, working holes hard and grassy nooks with every tackle under the sun should produce something.  I flipped over rocks as I wadded down stream looking for cray fish. I saw a bunch along with millions of minows. I tried WeeCaraw, Gizits, Husky Jerks, Blue Fox Minnows and leadheaded grubs but none of them were a hot ticket.  Water levels are low (as seen in the pic above) and water temps are warm.

I did catch some smallmouths but all were very small. I spent over 3 hours on the water and walked far but did not produce anything special. Someone please work the rain dance but fishing in Pittsburgh is SHIT right now.
