Monongahela River Fishing 8/5/22

It was a stormy evening in Pittsburgh on the Monongahela River.  I launched my Kayak from the South Side Boat Tramp in Pittsburgh, PA.  The weather was muggy and storms were hard to predict by watching the radar.  I planned to stay close to the boat ramp because of the storms in the area.

The smallmouth bite was good but no big ones to report.  I did catch 2 on one crankbait which was fun. The minnows were schooled up off one of the pilings under the Birmingham Bridge and smallmouths were feeding on them.

There were mulitple warnings of flash flood warnings and fishing in the city pool… you have to worry about the storm drainage coming out into the river.  While fishing under the Birmingham Bridge one of the storm gates was pushing sewer water into the river which caused a stink. Carp and catfish were popping on top of the water feeding on the waste and emptying into the river. GROSS!

I have still yet to catch a monster smallie in the Pittsburgh pool but hopefully eventually.  This later into the summer the Mon River holds colder water compared to the Allegheny.  The Mon River is deeper and has less of a rocky bottom which keeps the water temperatures lower which is better for fishing.
