RF Field Trip 2023 – Erie Fishing

I will open this post up with; we spent $500 on an Eskimo Quickfish 6i 6-Person Ice Shelter back in November for this trip. The goal was to go ice fishing at the Kinzua Castle on the Allegheny Reservoir.

Heck… we planned this about a year ago when the idea came up that we needed a good ice-fishing trip. Where can we go? The Kinzua Castle it was! Well, the big story is the tent didn’t even get set up and or used. The 2002 Winter weather pattern didn’t give us any chance to do an ice trip. The next option was Steelhead Fishing in Erie with staying in Ohio at my family’s Lake House. Overall the fishing was slow for two days of fishing for us. Friday started out with a heavy flow than expected. The weather patterns have been up and down all season causing a lot of runoff.  Friday we fished the low side of Elk closer to the lake. The fishing pressure was light but we go a later start in the day. The water had a darker green color but with a good amount of flow making it challenging to get our bait in the strike zones.

Jonathan and Doug seemed to know what they wanted and both landed some nice fresher fish.

Elk Creek was packed with anglers in the upper stretches on Saturday.  We saw upwards of 20 cars packed on Baron Road which does not have an official access area to park. Rumor has it that the Fish Commission grabbed a couple of truckloads from trout run and shipped them up Elk Creek and dropped them at Baron Bridge causing a flurry of anglers.  I can confirm the cars were deep because I was eyeing that as a starting location for us. I later found out about the stocking trucks were moving fish and likely the cause for the abundant fishing pressure.  As a note, I did hear there is no longer fishing access from Baron Road. The township put up no parking signs and there is no easy way to access the creek due to the road being so far away.

We ended up finishing the day off Saturday with some good stops on the creek.  Gotta Love Erie and some good company!

One of us will plug in Wangs goo cooking for the weekend.

TBC…
