RF OBX 3.0 Offshore Trip

Offshore Fishing

Alarm clock was dinging, coffee pot was percolating, birds not quite chirping at 3:30AM Thursday but the fish were biting…

John & Ryan headed south to Hatteras with John’s boat to head offshore out of Teachers Liar Marina hoping to find some big ones. Heading out of Hatteras Island inlet was a nasty boat ride, the rips were strong and the wavers were super close.  I thought to myself as we crashed down each wave, “This is going to be along day…”. After about 2 mins of thrashing in the boat it was over and we were on our way out to sea. The plan was to look for weed beds floating about 15miles out.

Weed line

It was pretty impressive how clear the water got in the Gulf stream. As we were riding out before we reached the weed lines we were watching the temperature gauge on the depth finder get warmer. When we located some floating weeds we dropped the lines in and got set for trolling. After a few mins of trolling BAM fish on! John hooked up on a small tuna. Although it was alitte bigger than a football it was pretty still a great fight. Next fish on was the Mahi Mahi pictured above. I fought this thing to the finish and never felt a huge fight like I did. Next big battle was the Wahoo John caught which was really impressive. The size of the fish and the fierce mouth it had was pretty intense.

John's Wahoo

The rest of the day provided alot of excitement catching Trigger’s, Amber Jack and Sea Bass. We landed some of the biggest Amber Jacks I have ever came across. Today I am back in Pittsburgh reflecting back on the trip and thinking what happened. Amazing is the only word that comes to mind and I can’t wait to get back out their. Next time John and I talked about heading to the canyons and just looking around. We have sometime before we plan our next trip but you better believe we’ll be saving up to buy bigger gear to fish for marlin and researching how to fish for these big fish better.

It was our first time in these waters and you could say… we did one hellva job!

Thanks to Rory for letting us use some of this trolling rigs. We caught fish on all of them!
